THE GIVER

The Giver is a 1993 Fictious young adult novel written by Lois Lowry and later published by Houghton Mifflin. Being one of the finest books written by the author, it had a great impact on the younger generation by increasing their awareness on rational thinking. Lois Lowry is well known for writing books on difficult complexes, dystopias and topics which only a few authors are brave enough to touch. The giver, being fictious, covers many aspects and emotions which reflect the real world. The true master-piece, which once read, provides an everlasting impact on the way people look at society.

The book dives deep into the significance of differences. The story emphasizes about how individuality can become a major developing tool in any society. The book puts forth a remarkable question in front of all its readers,” Will you trade your uniqueness for eternal happiness?”.

The plot is set in a dystopian society where every individual is indifferent and in the book the author recognizes this indifference as ‘sameness’. The book follows the protagonist, Jonas, a 12-year-old boy. The book explains its importance when Jonas is chosen as the ‘receiver of memory’ and struggles to grasp the beauty of ‘differences’ in a society which prioritizes the sense of equality over natural human emotion.

The fact that book preserves the theme of individuality until the end is remarkable. The book allows the reader to be part of a world which belongs to a system which only supports ‘sameness’ and defines ‘Love’ as just a four-letter word. The book also delivers a nice message on human memories and reflects on the value of such memories. The complete dystopian society , mental rebellion ,mystery and other open aspects of the book makes it a unique experience for any reader.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the timeline. Being a book from the 1990’s, it doesn’t fall short on the modern ideologies, which is really difficult to maintain as an Author. It's marvelous to know that the fictitious world in the book has the capability to greatly impact the non-fictitious world in our lives.
