Mark Twain once said, “Humour is a great thing, the saving thing after all. The minute it crops up, all our hardwork yield, all our irritations and resentments flit away and a sunny spirit takes their place." He's certainly not wrong!
Humour may very well be the greatest thing. It touches upon nearly every facet of life. Almost 90% of men and 81% of women report that a sense of humour is the most important quality they lookout for in a partner. Humour is the one thing which is enjoyed by all- irrespective of age, caste, gender. It is the one thing which can bind us all and generate a positive and happy environment. Even the most difficult situations can be handled with ease if we are armoured with a humorous mind and disposition.
Humour is something that gets polished with its regular use. Then why do most of us strive to sulk and contaminate their environment with negativity rather than smiles and laughter and spread happiness around? Every day we try to do things that make our lives better and happier; why not begin by the simple act of trying to find a lighter side of things in everyday life.
Humour doesn't just guard against depression. It also improves overall quality of life. Researchers have found that people who score highly in certain types of humour have better self-esteem, more positive effect, greater self-competency, more control over anxiety, and better performance in social interactions.
The very idea that a day can be spent without a laugh or smile sounds absurd to many. The small joys of life are found in places like classrooms where we make endless jokes with our friends, jokes which would not withdraw even an ounce of laughter on a stage, but those which can make the ones sitting around laugh so hard that they can barely contain themselves from getting sent out of the class. In a chaotic world where tension and rigidity is all we see, these moments can brighten up anybody’s day.
In everyday life, the common man suffers from a lot of unsolicited stress. We are subjected to trivial and significant challenges every day, but the way we choose to respond to them makes all the difference. To a certain extent, one has the power to make the best out of the worst situation, just by tackling it with a sprinkle of humour. Life is complex enough in itself. We should try to enjoy the light moments; otherwise, life’s trying times could drown us in self-pity and bitterness.
