Does Our Education System Promote Entrepreneurship?

India is a developing country and more than 80% of Indians find livelihood in the informal sector. This figure can be accounted for if we take a look at the grassroots of our social structure. Since childhood, we are expected to get a decent job once we are educated, without sowing the seeds for entrepreneurship. The crux of the problem is that the current education system trains us to become an employee rather than an entrepreneur.

There are several drawbacks of the current education system, which can push most of us against entrepreneurship. Since childhood, we are stressed the significance of homework submissions on time. This speaks volumes for the fact that we are asked to do something assigned by someone.

The current education system kills curiosity and creativity. The problem boils down to one of the most criticized points of the education system—the Indian education system promotes rote learning. This kills the desire to delve deeper into the topics we are made to study.

Teachers in most educational institutions are trained to teach. This training imparts only superficial knowledge, which is just enough to finish the curriculum. For instance, we all know the numeric value of π. But, only a few of us know that it can be obtained not just by 227 but also by dividing the perimeter of a circle by its diameter. This might not seem surprising since we’ll use the formula 2πr and divide it by 2r. But the fact is 3.14 was found after several experiments of manually measuring and calculating the circumference and diameter and the ratio of hundreds of circles by Archimedes.

The subjects taught in the current system do have their significance. But this system has also ignored several other important subjects such as investments, taxes and so on. Unfortunately, students aren't taught the art of making and managing money in school or college.

Automation is set to impact a variety of sectors. In the next few decades, the US is likely to replace about 30% of its employees due to automation. The education system operates with a general overview of existing domains, but automation will change everything. Education has therefore failed in helping students thrive in an automated workplace. This can eventually lead to unemployment.

Most start-ups try to find an existing problem in the market, consider all the existing solutions and loopholes and then come up with something innovative. We must look around and learn from the right people and instances. But this is not taught at any school.

Learning is indeed the first and foremost step for every new skill. But the current system teaches us to learn everything before implementing it. Constantly learning without any hands-on experience will not be able to help students retain the topics taught, and this can be a scary reality for thousands of us.

In a nutshell, we need the education system to let an individual explore their interest and help them realize those interests. We must re-orient our education system towards developing the mindset needed to become an innovative problem solver, which can, in turn, help build the next wave of entrepreneurs.
